The Low Temperature Center was established in 1971 as a facility for supplying cryogenic liquid and spreading the use of low temperature techniques. The Center consists of two branches on Suita and Toyonaka Campuses both of which have close relations with individual research groups. A low temperature mechanical testing machine was installed in 1978, and is being used for securing low temperature apparatus and developing cryogenic materials. Annual supply quantities for the year 2003 were 122,545 liter of liquid helium, which is liquefied in the Center, and 591,030 liter of liquid nitrogen. The equipment such as a 10 tesla superconducting magnet, a small refrigerator and other experimental apparatus is available for common use by researchers. The Center, in addition, pursues research on cryogenics, helps to solve technical problems in research and promotes fundamental and applied low temperature science.
